Kubuntu 7.04

Last week the new version, Feisty Fawn, of Kubuntu was released. For this new version there had been the release of an upgrade tool. The aim of this tool was to make the Edgy -> Feisty upgrade easy. For me the upgrade process was not quite as smooth as they seem to suggest.

First off I had problems getting the upgrade tool to fire. I had the KDE latest that is mentioned in the upgrade instructions, but it took several reloads to get to the point where the upgrade tool was happy to kick in. Once it kicked in the download was reasonable, only being slowed down by one of the other people who lives here also upgrading his machine at the same time.

During upgrade I went off to sleep and the install started. Here was were further problems were encountered. I am not sure if locking the machine/the screensaver caused a problem, but when I got up the install had stalled at 3%. From there I had a cycle of kill upgrade – restart upgrade – install a little bit more – stall. After a few times of this the install process kicked in correctly and finished the install.

While there may have been problems with the install it does seem to have worked correctly. After the reboot the new system came up correctly and it is an improvement on the old. Impressive work from all those involved.
