Lakes5 – Coniston

At the event on Monday there were signs saying that the third day was definitely on. However, a little while later the third day got postponed to the ‘rest’ day and at some point on Tuesday it then got cancelled. This meant that there were lots of people raring to go on the ‘rest’ day urban(-ish) race around Coniston.

I ran the long, which comprised of a section through the town, a couple of long legs up and down a big hill, a run back to the event centre, and finished with a maze section. I made an early mistake at four, when I missed where the control was and ran around a car park trying to find it. The run up hill I did fairly well, but I picked a poor option for coming back down again – a case where staying close to the straight line was not a good choice, as it involved too much up and down.

I struggled to read the map through the next section, losing a bit of time on the controls in this section. I then put on a decent bit of pace into the field for the maze section. It took me a good few seconds to get the map sorted, but after that I charged round and caught up with the two people who had gone into this section just before me.

I took 50:31 for the course and the best time in the results is 35:10 – a reasonable result, though there are more people in front of me that I would have liked. Exact placings are not possible as there are several people missing from the results.

After this we went off and got fish and chips – a good way to finish the evening, though a lot of other people had the same idea!
