Basingstoke parkrun and Fetch Mile

On Saturday I went to Basingstoke to run a 5k and then onto a track near Newbury to run a mile. Rather a good combination for the day and making good use of the fine weather we have been having recently.

Basingstoke Parkrun
Before this race I could not decide how fast to run. I kept changing my mind during the week – run fast; run comfortably; run for a PB. I had not run since racing on Wednesday and was not sure how fresh my legs were. Having done my warm up I decided I would start fast and see how it went.

I started a bit too fast and went through the first km in 3:47 – oops, time to slow down a bit. I then did three fairly even k’s – 4:10 – 4:04 – 4:05. The last km was tough and a bit slow – 4:20. This gave me a time of 20:26, one second behind my PB.

Fetch Mile
I wanted a PB here. I started well and tried to keep a fast pace. There was a strong head wind in the back straight, which meant we all had to work hard. On starting the final lap I knew it would be close on a PB and I wound the pace up, giving as much as possible on the final bit. My finish time was 5:54 – a one second PB.

I may have also then run a 100m, though I think it may be best to deny it.
